Not All Cloud Security is Created Equal

My colleague, OpenText EasyLink Product Marketing Manager Tracy Orlick, recently asked a timely and important question on this blog: Is it time to trust the cloud?

Having talked to IT security professionals last month at the Healthcare IT News Privacy and Security Forum I blogged about here, (see Part 1, Part 2), I learned that trust has to be earned by all solution providers because security is a daunting challenge. Both on-premise and cloud solutions are at risk in this era of professional hackers and developers of malware and phishing scams. Along with regulatory fines and negative public relations, organizations are extremely motivated to avoid a security breach because of the months of disruption it takes to resolve.

Cloud applications as a whole are unquestionably on the rise because of their value, feature richness, redundancy and flexibility. Virtually everyone agrees that trend is only going to continue. However, we should not lump all cloud solutions together into one bucket when it comes to security because there are clearly different approaches. Consumer-focused cloud solutions are not intended for enterprise security and may be missing many key security features altogether. Even among cloud solutions intended for the enterprise, there is variety in the amount of security features as well as the investment in data centers.

Buyers can recognize enterprise security in the cloud because it is multi-layered, has high investment in business continuity, and should also be transparent. Security can be rock solid in the cloud, but not everyone in the cloud has rock-solid security. Tracy’s list of questions is a great place to start evaluating providers.

So, is it time to trust the cloud? Unquestionably, yes…but only from the right cloud providers.  Just as with all solutions, the level of security has to be proven.

If you are already using cloud services, or if you are considering a move to the cloud, I would love to hear your comments.
